I know there are probably a lot of people out there who think “9 things—network marketing–you have to be kidding.”  Nope! These may not be all you need to know but they are right up there at the top of the list.

1. It ain’t about the product or service.  You are not there to sell vitamins or legal services or phone service or juice.  The product has nothing to do with your success.  It does not matter if your product is cheaper, better, faster, healthier or easier to use.  It does matter if your product has value and it does need to have that. It definitely does need to solve a problem for your customer and keep on solving that problem. 

2. The business is about marketing and doing it well. The real product is becoming a well-trained distributor of you product.  To be a well trained distributor you need to get into the leadership development business.  Then you go find others who want to become leaders and you train them or, if you are like Mike Dillard, you get smart and hire the ones who already have the skills and attitude of success so you don’t have to train them.

3. The real business is finding and developing people who are willing to become ‘professional networkers’ so they can be paid like one. This business is about developing people and telling them what they need to hear which may or may not be what they want to hear. Showing them how to be real leaders.

4. Who made the decision to be a network marketer?  Was it after some hyped up sales meeting in a hotel room with rah-rah leaders?

Or was it after careful thought and consideration that this is what I want to do. Network marketers can and do make a lot of money but it is not on emotion. It is on work done consistently, daily and over time. It is not going to happen last week.

5. You don’t really need a lot of stuff to get started. You do not need to understand the compensation plan or how to navigate the website or a lot of other stuff.  You just need to come to the table and be willing to become more than you are now.  You and your strengths are the unknowns.  You can learn how to make your strengths stronger and downplay your weaknesses or just deal with them.  We all have everything we need to succeed.  Most of us just don’t know it….yet.

6.& 7. Where are you and who put you where you are?  Well, have you looked in a mirror lately? If not, try it.  Looking back at you will be the person who put you exactly where you are right now. One of the things I have learned from Mike Dillard that he quotes from Dan Kennedy is “you will continue to be un_________ as long as you depend on other to make you _________.”  Evidently Dan Kennedy calls that ‘responsibility defined’.   Sure sounds good to me.  How about you?

8. Where is my ‘there’?  Where do you want to end up? What are your goals?  Are they written down and can you see them daily?  Do you have a time limit on them or are they just kinda like whenever?

There is a lot of truth in what Billy Graham says.  He never saw a hearse with a u-haul behind it.  You cannot take ‘it’ with you.  But what are you leaving behind? What will be in your ‘dash’?

There is a book about that.  Born 1980 (dash) died 2050. So, what will be in your dash?

9. How are you going to get from where you are to where you want to be and how long is it going to take you?  Who do you want to take with you?  You cannot go it alone.  You are not made that way and besides, no fun by yourself.

 So, if you are going into network marketing, just remember it is not about the ‘stuff’—it is about you and what you are willing to learn and do to get where you want to be.
